Beginning a job search online is an exercise in futility. In fact, the people who land well in a job that’s a great fit do the opposite: They begin with themselves.

What do I mean by that? I mean they look inside. They ask themselves important questions to determine what elements of a job and an employer they need to genuinely thrive.

How Do I Start A Job Search To Be Successful?

When I was laid-off in 2014, I started to consider my next steps. And, I came up with a few things to help me figure out if a potential job was going to be a good fit. For example, I decided specifically which skills I wanted to use on a daily basis (along with what I absolutely, no way, wanted to do anymore!). I thought about the workplace culture and what was important to me (I was so done with open office space which made it very difficult for me to concentrate). And I knew I wanted to work with people who shared my values.

The beauty of starting with these questions about me was that it changed my frame of mind.

Instead of the fear-based question “Will they hire me?” I had a new, empowered question: “Do I want to work here?”

How I Found the Perfect Fit During My Job Search

Ultimately, my personal exploration led me to becoming an entrepreneur where I have found work that gives my work meaning and the satisfaction of knowing that I am truly changing lives. It’s a good fit and I wish the same for you!
