They are calling it the “Great Resignation,” and a “labor market churn.” I’m calling it Musical Chairs!
Just like the children’s game, the job market right now has people dancing around hoping to seize their new “chair,” before the music stops!
At the same time, employers are desperate for help, as folks are leaving and taking their skills and talents to organizations that are aligned with their needs and values.
Like any game, finding a job in this environment takes a strategy, and like Musical Chairs, timing is everything!
If you’re looking around and thinking “Hmm…this could be a great time to make a move,” you’re right! But unlike other times when you might have mulled it over – if you want to take advantage of this unusual opportunity you have to get started now. Here’s my advice:
- Turn off the doubts, they’ll always be there.
- Quickly update your resume and LinkedIn. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Get some help if you need it. (See below for more details)
- Activate your network (“I’m thinking about making a move, and I wonder if you have any advice?”). Don’t worry about how long it’s been, it’s irrelevant if you had a good relationship – even once upon a long, long time.
