If you’re in a job search right now and feeling like the time from application to interview, and interview to offer is taking forever, you are not wrong.

LinkedIn’s Economic Graph research team analyzed the profiles of 400,000 confirmed hires on their site from June 2020 to March 2021. They focused on 15 industries, and examined the timeline from application to offer. CNBC reported the results below:

 

What does this mean for you? Well, it means that you are going to want to do something to stay top of mind. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Be sure to ask about the hiring timeline before the interview is over (e.g., “You should hear from us by next Friday)
  2. When that day comes, wait a day or two more (at most!) then send the hiring manager an email expressing your continued interest in the role and a specific thing that stood out in the interview that really appeals to you
  3. One week later, reach out to your HR contact to ask about the status of the search

This is NOT annoying. This is smart.
